I was just reading the New York Time 'Business Day' section and ist said the Netpasl computers would have a stronger hinge and a spill-proof keyboard. I had not heard that before, and I must say that between those additions and some of the security & timer functions it does sound like a decent machine for a child.
I'm not a fan of security software for kids, but this device seems to have it right. Rather than going with a restrictive filtering route, NetPal software uses a white-list, where you decide what the kids sees through their custom Disney desktop, which covers installed applications and online destinations. So you can limit programs or even just websites...so you could limit Webkinz to an hour per day.
If anything what makes this less or a bogus products is the hinge and spill-proof keyboard to me. That at least shows there is some thought goinbg into this not justa pure cash-in. Yet, I am even a little impressed with the white-list/timer software; it makes sense to have that in there as well because if used smartly it can be helpful. (Even if that 'help' is seeing how long it takes for Little Mary to disable it. She'll be at MIT before you know it, they grow up so fast!)
